As mothers, we carry so much. We juggle the roles of many. Mom, daughter, sister, friend, chef, house keeper, business woman, leader, the backbone to our families… and we try so hard to be great at it all. Often getting tangled up in comparison with others.
What most of us fail to realize is, there is always someone looking at you in a better light. Seeing the best of you. Comparing themselves and possibly feeling like less. We all have done it at one time or another. It is madness. What we often see is surface level. We don’t see the bumps and bruises hiding just under that layer of strength that inspires us so. The very things that make us human and relatable.
Who you may not see, is the mom that’s more like you than you thought.
The mom who wears a smile on her face at school drop off, but loses her cool before bedtime.
The Mom who eats chocolate in a dark laundry room, so she doesn’t have to share.
The mom who questions her abilities.
The mom who sets up playdates, for adult conversation.
The mom who lets the laundry pile up and escapes to Pinterest instead.
The mom who tugs at her once tight skin.
The mom who spends too much time picking apart her flaws in her reflection.
The mom who runs to the store alone, just to have some time to herself.
The mom who is proud she put make up on for the day.
The mom who lives in yoga pants.
The mom who loves her kids deeply, but desperately wants a short vacation from them.
The mom who is always tired, but piles on the concealer and fills up on coffee.
The mom who sometimes feels better seeing herself through a filter on Instagram.
The mom who is tempted to throw a tantrum right along side her toddler.
The mom who sometimes gives in, just for a moment of silence.
The mom who has lost her patience.
The mom who carries so much guilt for her shortcomings.
The mom who sees the best in her friends.
The mom who tries really hard to make sure her kids are happy and fulfilled.
The mom who sometimes struggles with depression alone.
The mom who drinks a glass of wine in the bathtub.
The mom who is afraid to talk about the days she messes up.
The mom who dances in the kitchen.
The mom who wakes up looking like a hot mess.
The mom who is always worrying about her kids.
The mom who can’t shower without thinking she hears a child crying.
The mom who loves being a mom, most days.
The mom who wants better for her children.
The mom who grits her teeth and fights for that better.
The mom who gets mad about spilled milk. Especially if it’s breastmilk.
The mom who has cookie crumbs in the backseat of her car.
The mom who spends countless hours researching topics that come with hard choices.
The mom who has read every sleep book there is, but toddler still wakes up.
The mom who worries she’s messing her kids up.
The mom who gets dolled up for a trip to the dr, because she can’t remember the last time she had valid reason.
The mom that most likely shares a lot of the same thoughts, struggles, and realties as you.
So, the next time you’re tempted to allow comparison and jealousy to creep it’s ugly way in… remember that you may be more alike than you think. We are all human. The more we relate the more that we can empower one another.
